The song is the band’s only No. 1 hit in the US
Van Halen’s “Jump” has officially joined Spotify’s Billions Club. The milestone was reached on April 12th, making it the band’s first song to achieve this impressive feat on the platform.
Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen shared his excitement on Instagram. “Thanks to all the fans for listening!” he writes.
“Jump” leads Van Halen’s Spotify streams by more than double of the second place “Panama” that has achieved 456.77 million streams as of this writing. “Runnin’ With The Devil” comes in third with just over a quarter of a billion streams. All three feature original frontman David Lee Roth on vocals.
“Jump,” the lead single from their immensely successful 1984 album, was a groundbreaking track for the band, featuring prominent use of synthesizers alongside Eddie Van Halen’s signature guitar work. The song was a bit of a departure for the band at the time of its release due to its keyboard-heavy sound, a change that initially met with some resistance within the Van Halen camp.
The song’s massive success proved to be a pivotal moment in their career, broadening their audience and solidifying their place in music history. The track became their only US No. 1 hit, spending five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
1984 went on to sell over ten million copies in the United States, officially being certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
“Jump” now joins a select group of rock classics in the Billions Club, including Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City,” Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets,” “Enter Sandman,” and “Nothing Else Matters,” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “You Give Love A Bad Name,” and “It’s My Life,” among others.
The Spotify Billions Club is a playlist that was first launched in 2020 and includes all the songs that have surpassed one billion streams on the platform. It’s a significant achievement, highlighting the enduring popularity and cultural impact of these songs. Once an artist reaches this milestone, Spotify often gifts them a “Billions Club” plaque to commemorate the event.
