Pop star achieves big streaming numbers
Reaching another unprecedented milestone, The Weeknd has made history as the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify. As of today (Tues, Feb 28th), he scored the biggest monthly listener count ever on the platform with 100.4 million. This enshrines him as the No. 1 artist in the world on Spotify. Meanwhile, his mega-smash “Blinding Lights” remains the DSP’s most streamed song of all time with 3.4 billion streams and counting.
His recent remix of “Die For You” with Ariana Grande also continues to put up numbers with 23.2 million Spotify streams in under a week’s time. The collaboration landed in the wake of the single’s staggering resurgence where it has completed the longest climb to No. 1 in US radio history. It has also clinched No. 1 on the Billboard Radio Songs Chart for two weeks and has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for all of 2023, recently vaulting into the Top 10, serving as his 16th Top 10 entry on the respective chart. The record also broke into the Top 20 of the Billboard Global 200, scoring his 15th Top 20 in the process.
Fans were given a sneak peek of the collaboration through Grande’s TikTok account where she posted herself working on the vocals stating that she wrote and recorded a verse for one of her friends after a 14-hour day on the set of the upcoming Jon M. Chu film Wicked.
The Weeknd’s anticipated Live at SoFi Stadium special just premiered on HBO. He will also be starring in his new television show, The Idol, on HBO alongside Lily-Rose Depp which he wrote and executive produced with Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. Release date and further information are forthcoming.
Earlier this month, he also achieved his fifth RIAA-certified Diamond single with “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” which follows “The Hills,” “Starboy” [featuring Daft Punk], “Blinding Lights,” and “Can’t Feel My Face.” The feat also marks The Weeknd as the fourth artist to earn five or more Diamond certifications.
