Global superstars continue to break world records

The Weeknd and Shakira add more accolades to their names as they each break multiple Guinness World Records. The Weekend (aka Abel Tesfaye) — who already held two Guinness World Records — is statistically the most popular musician on the planet, according to the organization. The 33-year-old Canadian singer’s success has seen him set new Guinness World Records titles for most monthly listeners on Spotify with 111.4 million (as of 20 March 2023), and the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

The Weeknd currently has nearly 30 million more monthly listeners than second-placed Miley Cyrus at 82.4 million. Shakira, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Ed Sheeran follow with 81.6 million, 80.6 million, 80.2 million, 75.5 million and 77.5 million, respectively.

The Weeknd’s surging streaming figures come on the back of the release of his “Die For You” remix featuring Ariana Grande, which went viral on TikTok. The track peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the seventh chart topper hit for both artists.

Shakira breaks 14 new records — four with a chart-topping collaboration with Argentinian DJ and producer Bizarapp. BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53 was released on YouTube in January and set the record for most viewed Latin track on YouTube in 24 hours with 63 million and then became the fastest Latin track to reach 100 million views on YouTube. It also earned the record for most streamed Latin track on Spotify in 24 hours with over 14 million plays. That number grew to more than 80.6 million by the end of the week, giving the Latin-pop superstar the title for the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in one week.

Shakira recently received 10 additional titles from the company in 2023, giving her 17 Guinness World Records titles. They include highest-charting Spanish-language track on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist with her “TQG” collaboration with Karol G; most cumulative weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart by a female artist for a total of 67 weeks; most Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart by a female artist with 35; most No. 1s on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart by a female artist with 21; first female artist to replace herself at No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53 dethroning her “Monotonía” duet with Ozuna; most Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart by a female artist with 33; most Billboard charts topped by a Spanish-language track by a female artist with 15; most No. 1s on Billboard’s Latin Digital Song Sales chart with 13; and most Top 10 hits on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart by a female artist with 39.
