Megadeth launches mysterious countdown clock

Fans can sign up via email

Megadeth is prepping an announcement for tomorrow (Thurs, Aug 14th). The metal group has launched a mysterious countdown clock on its website that counts down to 11 am EDT/8 am PDT.

The landing page says, “The end is near. It’s crystal clear. Part of the master plan,” a line from the band’s classic song “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.” Fans can sign up to receive the news via email.

Many fans believe the band will announce its 17th studio album or a celebration of its fourth album, Rust in Peace, released on September 24, 1990, that features “Holy Wars.”

Mustaine has been vocal about the band wrapping its next album, which will be released through frontman Dave Mustaine’s label, Tradecraft, with Frontiers Label Group’s BKLIIBLK. The band reteamed with producer/engineer/mixer Chris Rakestraw, who worked with Megadeth on their 2016 album, Dystopia, and 2022’s The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead.

Megadeth was formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine. Known for their technically complex guitar work and musicianship, Megadeth is one of the “big four” of American thrash metal, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer. Their music features complex arrangements, fast rhythm sections, dual lead guitars, and lyrical themes of war, politics, religion, death, and personal relationships.

Since their explosive debut, Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! in 1985, Megadeth has built a legacy of seminal albums, including the genre-defining Rust In Peace in 1990 and the multi-platinum Countdown To Extinction in 1992. Their catalogue boasts five platinum-certified records and sixteen studio albums, culminating in their latest release, The Sick, the Dying… And The Dead! in 2022. Over their 42-year career, Megadeth has solidified their status as one of metal’s most enduring acts. The band earned 12 Grammy nominations, winning their first in 2017 for “Dystopia” (Best Metal Performance), and sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Furthermore, Megadeth has built a global community of fans, hosting the acclaimed Gigantour festival and launching the MegaCruise in 2019. Their iconic mascot, Vic Rattlehead, remains a symbol, regularly appearing on album artwork and live shows. Led by Mustaine—the band’s unwavering creative force—Megadeth’s current lineup features bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. With over four decades of metal dominance, Megadeth’s legacy is stronger than ever.
