Global superstar Ludacris celebrates the 25th anniversary of his breakout Def Jam South debut album, Back For The First Time, with a new vinyl version via UMe. Back for the First Time – 25th Anniversary is available now as a 2 LP classic black vinyl via the rapper’s online store.
Reigniting southern hip-hop, Ludacris vaulted to the forefront of the culture when he originally dropped Back For The First Time on October 17, 2000, exactly 25 years ago. Upon arrival, the album bowed at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and captured No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. It eventually earned a triple platinum certification from the RIAA. It boasted the double platinum-certified classic “What’s Your Fantasy” featuring Shawnna, which reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and graced the soundtrack of the cult classic comedy How High. Plus, it spawned the seminal “Southern Hospitality” featuring Pharrell. Thus far, the record has amassed hundreds of millions of streams.
Ludacris notably tapped the talents of powerhouse producers to power the music, including Organized Noize, Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, and The Neptunes, in addition to personally producing or co-producing a handful of songs himself. Looking back, Stereogum marveled at how, “It was just one long series of relentlessly fun songs — banger after banger after banger. I loved it. Still do.”
Next up, Ludacris will grace the stage of One Musicfest in Atlanta, GA on Sunday, October 26th. He will be delivering a special 25th anniversary performance with friends.
