Evans shares a cover of an Australian holiday classic
Solrise Records/Virgin Music Group’s Australian-born, Nashville-based country mainstay Morgan Evans rings in the holiday season his own way with a cover of “How To Make Gravy,” out now.
Originally written and performed by 17-time ARIA Award-winning Paul Kelly, “How to Make Gravy” has become an Australian Christmas classic. Told from the perspective of an inmate named Joe calling home to his brother Dan ahead of the holidays, it’s a moving story about family that is especially poignant for those absent from their hometowns at Christmas.
“Recording ‘How To Make Gravy’ came with a weight and responsibility. It’s one of the greatest songs ever written,” Morgan shares. “It’s not your typical Christmas song, but it’s always hit me right in the guts. Anyone who’s ever spent Christmas away from home knows that feeling. I wanted to make a version in 2025 that honors Paul Kelly’s original, but brings a little country soul, texture and the emotion that comes with that. What a song. Means a lot to release my own version. Have a Merry Christmas!”
“How to Make Gravy” follows the success of Evans’ first new single in over two years, “Beer Back Home,” the first taste of his forthcoming sophomore album Steel Town, due out March 20, 2026.
Next month, Evans will continue his globe-trekking Beer Back Home pop-up shows, started in October in Newcastle, Australia, with a one-night-only takeover at Old Mates Pub in New York City on December 3rd.
