The film kicks off the next installment of the Music Box series
The HBO Original documentary Music Box: It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, the first film in the next installment of the Music Box series created by Bill Simmons, is directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg (HBO’s The Case Against Adnan Syed, Phoenix Rising) and debuts on Thursday, December 4th at 9 pm ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. A Topic Studios and Fremantle production, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen at film festivals worldwide, including Rome and IDFA, after a robust theatrical release.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley covers the life of the rising young star with an otherworldly voice and boundary-pushing artistry, who left the ‘90s music world reeling when he died suddenly at age 30 after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Grace. Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives and intimate accounts from his mother, Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, and former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley illuminates one of modern music’s influential and enigmatic figures.
Buckley launched his career at a tribute to his late father, folk musician Tim Buckley, but quickly became a rising star himself and signed with Columbia Records. His only studio album, Grace, was released to rave reviews and challenged conventional ideas of genre and gender. His intimate and influential cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” further catapulted him to fame. Under pressure to produce his second album, he retreated to Memphis to escape the spotlight and the ever-growing glare of the public eye. In a tragic accident, Buckley drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997, leaving behind an unfinished second album and a devastated family, friends, and fans. An intimate portrait of Buckley, the documentary celebrates his timeless body of work.
The Music Box series, which debuted on HBO in 2021, is a collection of documentary films exploring pivotal moments in the music world.
Subsequent films in the upcoming Music Box series include Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, premiering on December 11th, Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately? on December 18th, and Happy and You Know It, debuting on Christmas.

Happy And You Know It is a joyful and surprising journey into the fascinating – and at times insidious – world of toddler pop. The film explores why kids’ music is so catchy, can be deeply meaningful, and how AI is taking hold and shaping the industry. The film features appearances by The Wiggles, Laurie Berkner, and other musicians, directed by Penny Lane.
