Song makes digital debut this fall
Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson’s duet of “9 To 5” will be released digitally on September 9th. The song, produced by Shane McAnally, made its premiere during Still Working 9 to 5 documentary that chronicles the 40th anniversary of the classic 9 To 5 film that stars Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman.
“I’m so excited to finally announce the new version of ‘9 To 5’ I recorded with the legendary Dolly Parton is coming out on September 9th!!” Clarkson shares on social media. “Thank you Shane McAnally for making this dream a reality and putting this project together.”
The documentary, which made its world premiere at this year’s SXSW, explores the comedic tone of the film and how it resonated with a wide audience at a time when the feminist message was being rejected and/or feared by a large swathe of the population. It further follows how the success of the film spawned various 9 to 5 spin-offs including a TV series (1980s) and musicals (2009 & 2019), discussing the same issues addressed in the film (and its spinoffs) and questions if the message retains its original poignancy, as well as examining what has and has not changed for women in the workplace over the last 40 years.
In June, Clarkson released her Kellyoke EP featuring new studio recordings of some of her favorite covers she’s performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Tracks include Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever,” Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees,” and Linda Ronstadt’s “Blue Bayou,” among others.
On October 21st, Atlantic Records will issue Clarkson’s ninth studio album, When Christmas Comes Around…,” on vinyl. The 2021 collection, which is her second Christmas album, will be available on gold vinyl with Target offering an exclusive version on white vinyl. When Christmas Comes Around… features 15 tracks with a mix of new original songs and Christmas classics. It sees Clarkson explore a wide range of holiday emotions and experiences anchored by her incomparable vocal prowess.
On October 14th, Parton will release an expanded edition of her 2020 Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas, with eight tracks, including rarities making their CD, vinyl and digital debuts. A Holly Dolly Christmas: Ultimate Deluxe Edition will be available on CD and 2 LP white vinyl via Warner Music Nashville. The music will also be available the same day on digital and streaming services. Parton’s classic track “A Smoky Mountain Christmas,” one of the rarities from the Ultimate Deluxe Edition, is now available digitally.
This holiday season, Parton will also star in NBC’s Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas. The cast has been unveiled to feature Jimmy Fallon, Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jimmie Allen, Zach Williams and Miley Cyrus as guest stars with Tom Everett Scott, Ana Gasteyer and Angel Parker also starring.
A release date for the film is pending, but many Dollywood guests have shared social media encounters with Parton, Nelson and other cast members during filming this past summer.
