Eric Church, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde and others pay tribute

With a career spanning over 40 years, John Anderson has made his mark as a legend in the country music landscape, further established by his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. Thanks to The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, he is now being honored with a tribute album called Something Borrowed, Something New: A Tribute to John Anderson, due on CD and LP on August 5th via Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound.

During the recording of his 2020 album Years — which Auerbach produced — both peers and admirers whose works have been influenced by his music emerged with well founded praise for his unmatched legacy. With this, Auerbach laid the foundation to have stars such as Eric Church, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde, Brothers Osborne, Gillian Welch, John Prine and others cover some of Anderson’s best songs for the collection.

“Listening to everybody do their own takes on the songs shows how the songs really come through. And I thought to myself, ‘You might have been young and foolish back then, but you sure did pick some good songs,'” Anderson shares of the project. “It’s very gratifying to know that some things really do not change, and a great country song remains a great country song. Any one person on the record would be a real tribute, but all of them together? It’s a pretty big deal for me personally.”

“We weren’t trying to piddle around and make the normal tribute record,” Auerbach adds. “It had to be the best singers with the best songs and the best arrangements, and they had to come into the studio. This wasn’t like, ‘Mail me the song, and we’ll put it together.’ I think it makes this record unique. I don’t think most tribute records are done like this. I think that’s why it sounds like a cohesive album. It feels like an amazing mix tape.”

The album was produced by Dan Auerbach and David Ferguson. “I Just Came Home to Count the Memories” performed by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings is available now.

Vinyl Me Please (VMP) will have an exclusive edition limited to 500 copies and pressed on single LP bloodshot vinyl at Memphis Recording Pressing. It will arrive in a single direct-to-board, foil stamped and numbered jacket.

Anderson is one of country’s most beloved figures. He’s released 60 charting singles in four consecutive decades with five No. 1 songs.
