First solo music since 2017
Katy Perry unveils her first new solo music since 2017. On the single “Never Really Over,” Perry explores the nature of relationships. She co-wrote “Never Really Over” with Zedd, Dan Haywood, Leah Haywood, Dagny, Gino Barletta, Michelle Buzz, Jason Gill and Hayley Warner. The track was produced by Zedd and Dreamlab.
“All of our relationships – from first love, through failed love, to great love – all become a part of you, so that none are ever really over, and once you accept both the dark and the light, you may find that the darkness brought you to the light,” Perry says reflecting on the song.
Perry shot the accompanying video near Malibu, CA with Philippa Price (St. Vincent, BANKS).
The pop star last teamed with Zedd for “365.” The video, directed by Warren Fu (The Weeknd, Daft Punk) and conceptualized by Perry, asks the question: Could an AI learn to love? The video tells the poignant story of an android Katy Perry, who yearns to be human, as she attempts to make a genuine connection with Zedd.
In her ten years with Capitol Records, Perry has racked up a cumulative 30+ billion streams alongside worldwide sales of more than 43+ million adjusted albums and 133+ million tracks. With the singles “Roar,” “Firework,” and “Dark Horse” each surpassing the ten million threshold including song sales and streams, Perry became the first artist to earn three RIAA Digital Single Diamond Awards. Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl performance is the highest-rated in the event’s history. She is the most-followed person globally on Twitter, and the first to surpass 100 million followers. She is the only female artist to have four videos surpass a billion views each. Her videos for “Firework” and “Last Friday Night” have over one billion views, while “Roar” and “Dark Horse” have surpassed the two billion mark.
