Doll is sixth in the Barbie Signature Music Series collection

Tina Turner has been immortalized as a Barbie for its Signature Music Series. Mattel is celebrating the Grammy-winning rock icon with her own doll that commemorates her smash hit “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” with a design that is inspired by the iconic outfit she wore in the music video.

The articulated Black Label doll dons a black mini dress paired with a denim jacket, sheer black tights, and black heels. Her signature hairstyle, drop earrings, and a microphone accessory complete her look.

If there’s a phrase that fits with Tina Turner, it’s got to be the “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.” She the fifth artist to be inducted into to Mattel’s Barbie Signature Music Series, with this sixth overall doll in the collection.

“This is my first doll in the current collection, though I worked on a series called ‘Ladies of the 80s’ back in 2010,” designer Bill Greening tells Mattel. “Let’s just say Tina has been on my wish list for a very long time. We started it right about the time she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

Turner was highly involved in the creation of the doll, something Greening says was a dream come true.

“She was very involved in the design process,” Greening adds. “And the ‘What’s Love’ look was the choice right from the start. As a Gen Xer, MTV was a big influence in my pre-teen and teen years. ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ and ‘Let’s Stay Together’ was our introduction to Tina, for kids of my generation. ‘What’s Love’ was such a huge hit – the video was on MTV constantly! The song and iconic look really defined Tina’s ‘80s comeback to me.”

Greening says the most challenging part of the creation was Turner’s hair.

“We used a lot of screen grabs to see the hair at all angles. Lots of teasing and hairspray was involved!” he quips.

Turner went from singing as a young girl in her rural church choir in Nutbush, Tennessee, to becoming the legendary performer hailed as the undisputed “Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.” She is a Grammy-winning, chart-topping singer, and one of the best-selling recording artists of all time.

The doll retails for $55 and is available widely, including the Mattel website. The Barbie is sold out via Amazon as of press time.
