The new format premieres in spring 2026
NBC has unveiled that The Voice will undergo a significant format change for season 29 in spring 2026. The coaches for season 29 will be Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine, dubbed The Voice: Battle of Champions, with a coaching panel completely comprised of former Voice winners.
As season 29 will coincide with NBC Sports’ “Legendary February,” the landmark season will be infused with fast-paced, competitive elements inspired by both, delivering a fresh twist on the format that raises the stakes for coaches and artists alike. ”Legendary February” refers to February 2026, when NBC Sports will present three of the biggest events in sports in one month – Super Bowl LX, the Milan Cortina Olympic Winter Games, and the NBA All-Star Game.
During the Blind Auditions, coaches will compete in a “Triple Turn Competition” for the most three-chair turns, with the winner gaining an advantage in the next round. The Battle Rounds will see the coach with the most three-chair turns earn a “Super Steal,” which trumps other coaches’ steal attempts. The Knockouts will see each coach bring back two fan-favorite artists from previous seasons to compete in an “In-Season All-Star Competition.”
Original The Voice coach CeeLo Green will help determine the winner of these All-Star Showdowns, and the coach with the most wins is guaranteed a second finalist in the finale.
For the first time, super fans and past Voice artists will be part of a new voting block in the in-studio audience, voting in real-time during the semi-finals and finale.
As previously reported, season 28 will premiere in the fall with coaches Michael Buble returning for his third consecutive season, Niall Horan returning after three seasons, and Reba McEntire and Snoop Dogg both returning after a one-season hiatus.
Initially, the show will air on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT. Once NBC’s NBA coverage begins in October, the competition series will shift to a single-night weekly format, airing solely on Monday nights. These Monday episodes will initially be two hours long, then scale back to one-hour installments later in the fall.
Both seasons 28 and 29 will film concurrently while Clarkson does double duty hosting the seventh season of her eponymous talker, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
