The famed Sunset Strip club is celebrating its 50th anniversary
The Roxy has continued to find new ways to celebrate their 50th anniversary this month, announcing the first Sunset & Vinyl Market record fair on September 17th and the addition of even more new shows to their illustrious fall lineup. Sunset & Vinyl Market will be open to the public adjacent to The Roxy at 9009 Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood from 8 am until 1 pm, featuring iconic West Hollywood vendors like the Rainbow Bar & Grill and Holey Grail donuts and coffee; alongside booths from Los Angeles vinyl leaders like Record Safari, Deadly Wax, Boogie Maru Sounds, AudioPhileUSA, Shattered Music, Galaxy Music, Str33trecords, and many more. Exclusive and limited edition merchandise for The Roxy’s 50th anniversary will also be available, curated by Oscar Adler and featuring the club’s classic “Rockin’ R” logo.
New shows have also been added to this milestone celebration for the iconic Sunset Strip music club. Adding to a fall lineup that already features two special shows from Neil Young with Crazy Horse on September 20th and 21st – benefitting The Painted Turtle and Bridge School – The Roxy has added performances from Metric, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? on October 12th, Ricky Lee Jones on October 18th and Tkay Maidza on November 7th. Additional shows that were previously announced include the return of Los Angeles’ own Wallows to The Roxy on September 23rd and Stephen Marley performing his father Bob Marley’s legendary album Live at Roxy, recorded at the club in 1976, taking place September 24th, with a second late show now added that same night.
This month, The Grammy Museum will also open its The Roxy: 50 and Still Rockin’ exhibit, as previously shared with the initial group of festivities. An opening night celebration has been announced for Sunday, September 17th with a special film screening, a rooftop reception, and a panel featuring musician, songwriter and producer Cisco Adler, Goldenvoice CEO Paul Tollett, music journalists Allison Hagendorf, Steve Appleford along with music entertainment executive Julie Pilat.
The City of West Hollywood will present Lou Adler and Nic Adler in conversation for the City’s Artists & Icons series on September 12th at the West Hollywood City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room. The event coincides with the debut of a photographic exhibit about the Roxy’s 50th anniversary at the adjacent West Hollywood Library, curated by Jason Emmons and accompanied by written anecdotes from key players. The exhibit is free and open to the public through May 2024 during the library’s open hours.
The Roxy has hosted many of the biggest names in music at the early stages of their careers over the past 50 years and continues to be a career-defining moment for emerging talent. The Roxy has been immortalized on live albums by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Marley, The Ramones, Brian Wilson, Chuck Berry featuring Tina Turner, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Zappa, Gladys Knight, Guns N’ Roses, Buzzcocks, George Benson, Todd Rundgren and Warren Zevon. In addition to the astounding list of musical performers above, the club is also where Adler launched The Rocky Horror Show in the US, to an opening night audience that included Jack Nicholson, Cher, Mick Jagger and John Lennon. It has also played a pivotal role in the careers of comedians like Cheech & Chong, Paul Reubens and Richard Pryor. In September 1973, the club was co-founded by Adler and Valentine, with music industry legends Elliot Roberts, David Geffen, Bill Graham and Peter Asher participating as investors and/or consultants.
