The hook-loaded pop daydream features Jude Cole
Founding Toto songwriter and musician Steve Porcaro shares “2x Lover,” the third single from his upcoming solo album The Very Day, arriving October 3rd via Green Hill Productions. Featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Jude Cole, the track is a breezy, romantic slice of pop storytelling with an undeniable hook, one Porcaro had been holding onto for years.
“I’d been working on that chorus forever,” says Porcaro. “I knew it was a strong chorus, so I kept it in my back pocket until I found the right collaborator. I’ve always loved Jude’s voice and knew he could bring the perfect feel to it—both vocally and lyrically.”
The two longtime friends built “2x Lover” from Porcaro’s original tape, with Cole penning the verses and bringing the story to life. The result is part paperback romance, part made-for-TV daydream—playful, cinematic, and timeless in its appeal.
“2x Lover” follows the sunny piano pop of “Miss Jane Sinclair” and the reflective uplift of “Change,” continuing the rollout toward the album. The Very Day features collaborations with some notable voices and talents, including Gardner Cole, Marc Bonilla, Jason Scheff, and more, alongside Porcaro as lead vocalist.
A platinum-selling songwriter celebrated for penning Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” and shaping the sonic fabric of pop music with his distinctive synthesizer work, Porcaro has spent a lifetime composing and producing for others. His influence as a behind-the-scenes architect of modern pop was recently celebrated in the HBO documentary Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, which revisited the smooth California sound he helped create. But with The Very Day, Porcaro steps back into the spotlight, finishing a deeply personal collection of songs he’s long envisioned.
