The singer/songwriter is in ICU at a Santa Monica hospital

Iconic singer Tom Petty was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home. He was discovered sometime within the last 24 hours. He is currently in the ICU at a Santa Monica hospital via the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

The “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” singer achieved fame as the frontman for Tom Petty and the Hesrtbreakers in the 1970s. Since then, his talents as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter have earned him status a legend of rock and roll.

The singer performed his final Hollywood Bowl concerts on September 21st, 22nd and 25th. All shows were sold out. Petty had plans to retire after this, his final tour with the Heartbreakers.

An updated report from TMZ, who first broke the story, indicates that the 66 year Petty’s family has made the decision to pull life support due to a lack of brain activity and he is not expected to live through the day. TMZ also says a chaplain was called in around 10:30 am, but the singer is “still clinging to life.” TMU has reached out to Petty’s representatives to confirm this, but have not received comment as of press time. CBS News initially confirmed his death, but the LAPD is retracting it.

Petty’s hospitalization comes just hours after a 64-year-old Nevada man shot up a country music festival in Las Vegas, in what has been confirmed to be the deadliest mass shooting in Modern U.S. history.
