The song appears on the forthcoming The Whisper Sessions
Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitar legend, producer, and Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes has released his new single “You Ain’t Above Me,” the latest offering from his forthcoming album The Whisper Sessions, out September 12th via Fantasy Records. “You Ain’t Above Me” is a bluesy soul ballad about speaking up for oneself. The Whisper Sessions is a collection of stripped-down versions of songs from Haynes’ recent solo album, Million Voices Whisper.
“This stripped-down version is actually the only time I’ve ever performed it this way,” shares Haynes. “I played it on my new Signature Gibson Les Paul with P-90 pickups which offers a cleaner and brighter sound than most folks would expect from me, which worked perfectly for the rhythm accompaniment of this kind of soul ballad.”
The Whisper Sessions is a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the essence of each track, where every lyric and note resonates with newfound clarity and depth. The nine-track digital-only album includes recent single “These Changes” featuring co-writer and Haynes’ longtime Allman Brothers Band bandmate Derek Trucks, who appears on three songs. The Whisper Sessions features seven standouts from Haynes’ acclaimed fourth solo album, Million Voices Whisper, including the singles “This Life As We Know It,” which reached Top 15 on the Americana singles chart and Top 40 at Triple A radio, and “Real Real Love” featuring Trucks, whose lyrics were initially started by Gregg Allman, as well as two poignant covers including a stunning version of the ABB classic “Melissa” also featuring Trucks. Each track on The Whisper Sessions is an intimate, reimagined version highlighting Haynes’ emotive and soulful vocals, six-string mastery, and heartfelt storytelling.
The group will reconvene for their first shows of 2025 with a headlining date in Louisville and festival appearances at FloydFest 25 ~ Aurora and Flood City Music Festival. Starting on August 27th, Gov’t Mule will embark on their Back In The Saddle Tour, which will find the Grammy-nominated quartet, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary, traveling throughout the East Coast and Midwest until November 1st on the band’s first big tour run since February 2024. Inclusive of their upcoming tour is a six-date co-headlining run with Tedeschi Trucks Band in September and October.
