An investigation is underway
The City of Denver and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a woman who was in attendance at The Avett Brothers’ July 5th concert at Red Rocks.
“We are investigating the death of a woman who was attending the concert on Friday night,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs spokesperson Jacki Kelly tells The Denver Gazette. “Preliminarily, this appears to be nothing more than a very sad, unforeseen medical event.”
Conflicting reports indicate that two people possibly died during the concert. However, Kelly confirms only one passed away.
“We only had one death investigation at Red Rocks. The decedent was a female,” Kelly confirms, stating that “maybe he was transported and didn’t pass away.”
The woman’s identity is unknown but was recognized as Rusty when the band honored her during its third and final performance at the venue on Sunday night.
“Friday night, we lost somebody in the parking lot,” Scott Avett told the audience. “What we understand is they fell ill and they didn’t make it. So, we consider that losing one of our own. That man’s name was Rusty, and we want to send Rusty love, his family love, and we want to dedicate this show and this song to Rusty.”
According to reports, The Avett Brothers was told that two deaths occurred. However, the police department stated, “It’s certainly plausible the band was given the wrong info,” and that the sheriff’s department would have confirmed a second death had it happened.
