YG releases ‘Lovers or Friends’ featuring Leon Thomas

The song will appear on his forthcoming album

Multi-platinum rapper YG continues the rollout for his upcoming album The Gentleman’s Club with his latest single, “Lovers or Friends,” featuring Leon Thomas. The track follows “Hollywood” and “2004,” showcasing a different vibe, one that’s set over a smooth, funk-inspired beat perfect for summer and produced by longtime collaborator Ty Dolla $ign. Alongside the release, YG has officially announced that The Gentleman’s Club will arrive on October 3rd via BMG.

“Lovers or Friends” rides a funky, mid-tempo bounce that blends a classic West Coast sound with smooth R&B vibes. Leon Thomas delivers a catchy hook, singing “Are we lovers or are we friends? / Please don’t make me have to ask again, Are we lovers or are we friends? / Tell me if I have to play pretend,” capturing the tension of blurred lines in relationships. YG’s verses lean into that uncertainty with lines like “Baby tell me what you wanna hear,” as he tries to navigate the situationship with honesty and charm.

The official music video for “Lovers or Friends” continues building on The Gentleman’s Club aesthetic we saw in the previous releases. Shot in black and white, the video opens with male dancers dressed in sharp black suits, a nod to classic “Gentlemen’s Club” style, with a subtle ode to Michael Jackson woven throughout.YG and Leon Thomas are seen performing with a live band, bringing a smooth, nostalgic energy to the screen. As the video unfolds, YG and his love interest are shown dancing and enjoying each other’s company, but the video ends on a surprising note as YG’s date is dropped off at home and is greeted by her partner, leaving the viewer questioning whether they were lovers or just friends.
