Sets include a remastered edition of the album and more

Metallica has announced the 30th anniversary edition of its self titled album, known as The Black Album, for release on September 10th via its own Blackened Recordings. This “definitive” reissue is remastered for ultimate sound quality and will be available in several configurations to suit every music fan’s preference.

The Black Album is one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed records of all time. Its 1991 release not only gave Metallica its first No. 1 album in no fewer than 10 countries, including a four week run at No. 1 in the US, its unrelenting series of singles — “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam”, and “Sad But True” — fueled the band’s rise to stadium headlining, radio and MTV dominating household name status. The album’s reception from the press was similarly charged, building over the years from the top 10 of the 1991 Village Voice Pazz & Jop national critics poll to becoming a constant presence in the likes of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. The album’s impact and relevance continue to grow — as proven by one indisputable fact: The Black Album remains unchallenged as the best-selling album in the history of Nielsen Soundscan, outselling every release in every genre over the past 30 years.

The standard album is remastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering and all other content is remastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering. All content was overseen by executive producer Greg Fidelman.

The limited edition deluxe numbered box set (with magnetic flap) of Metallica (Remastered) includes more than 24 hours of content across 14 CDs, 6 LPs and 6 DVDs. It includes the album remastered on 180-gram double LP and CD, “Sad But True” picture disc, three live LPs, 14 CDs and six DVDs featuring unreleased content (live shows, rough mixes, demos, etc), MP3 download card of all audio, four tour laminates, lanyard, three lithos, three guitar picks, lyric folder and sheets, and a 120-page hardcover book with never-before-seen photos and stories from those who were there.

The reissue will also be available as a Deluxe 3 CD featuring the remastered album alongside 27 live tracks, demos, & rough mixes. A 2 LP 180-gram vinyl with MP3 card, single CD and cassette of the original album remastered will also be offered.

In celebration, the band will also release The Metallica Blacklist that celebrates the enduring influence of Metallica with an unprecedented 53 artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Album cut.

Available on digital & streaming on September 10th and arriving on vinyl & CD on October 1st, all profits will be donated to charities of each contributing artist’s choice along with Metallica’s own foundation, All Within My Hands.

Much more than a mere tribute, The Metallica Blacklist offers up new dimensions of the record whose gravitational pull first drew the mainstream to Metallica in 1991 — and provides new insights into the universal and timeless appeal that kept it there: the boundary-smashing influence these 12 songs have had on fans and musicians of all stripes. Blacklist’s 53 tracks find singer songwriters, country artists, electronic and hip hop artists sharing their love of these songs alongside punk rockers, indie darlings, icons of rock, metal, world music and many, many more.

The Metallica Blacklist will be available in formats including digital, 4 CD and a limited edition 7 LP vinyl pressing. Pre-orders will instantly receive multi-platinum selling recording artist, songwriter, philanthropist and trailblazer Miley Cyrus’ version of “Nothing Else Matters” featuring WATT, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo and Chad Smith, and Colombian-born rock/pop superstar, and winner of 20+ Grammy & Latin Music Grammy Awards Juanes’ interpretation of “Enter Sandman.” Chris Stapleton, Darius Rucker, Mickey Guyton, Alessia Cara, St. Vincent and others are also featured on the project.

All profits from The Metallica Blacklist will be split evenly between the All Within My Hands Foundation and 50+ charities chosen by the artists who play on the album. All Within My Hands was founded by the band in 2017 as a way for the entire Metallica family to give back to communities that have supported the band by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services.

The band will also release Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White, a book featuring unpublished photographs and introductions by photographer Ross Halfin and the band members. Halfin captured the band at One on One Studios in North Hollywood and shot thousands of film rolls during the 300 date tour that followed between 1991 and 1993. He intimately documented the hectic performing schedule, backstage, rehearsals, interviews, band meetings and travel, alongside unique portrait shots of the band.

The book will be available on October 19th via Reel Art Press in deluxe, limited and signed editions.
