The rapper died on July 13th in Miami

2 Live Crew rapper Fresh Kid Ice, whose real name is Chris Wong Won, has died at the age of 53. Won died from health complications in a Miami hospital earlier this morning (July 13th). Former bandmate Luther Campbell tweeted the news earlier today.

“I just got the word that my long time friend and rap legend Fresh Kid Ice the Chinaman has passed away,” Brother Marquis tells Vibe. “I would like to say that I love him and extend my condolences to his family. He truly loved all of his fans. I’ll always remember and cherish all of the good times we had together and all of the history we made. I would like to express my true love for him.”

No word on the cause of death but Won had suffered from health issues in recent years.

Won formed the group in the mid-80s while in the U.S. Airforce in California with DJ Mr. Mixx before Campbell and Marquis joined. The controversial group went on to release a string of sexually explicit gold and platinum albums from 1986 to 1991. Their biggest album was their 1989 debut, As Nasty As They Wanna Be.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Lionsgate has recently announced a 2 Live Crew biopic called The Book Of Luke. The studio is partnering with Temple Hill to develop the film based on Campbell’s memoir Book of Luke: My Fight for Truth, Justice and Liberty City. The film will focus on Campbell being on the other end of a copyright lawsuit in which he won, establishing music sampling as a form of parody.

Per usual, the music community has expressed their thoughts on social media.
