The track was recorded at the Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Northridge, California

Dave Grohl and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and frontman Scott Ian — credited as GBI — will release “The Regulator” single on Record Store Day on April 20th via Megaforce Records. The song is a cover of the iconic Bad Brains track from its self-titled 1982 debut album.

Released as a seven-inch exclusive, only 3,000 copies of the track were pressed. All proceeds will go towards healthcare for Bad Brains’ frontman Paul D. Hudson, better known as HR, who suffers from rare, severe headaches known as SUNCT.

The collaboration came together as Anthrax recorded songs for its next album at Grohl’s 606 Studios in Northridge, California. The Foo Fighters were camped there as well for rehearsals. Grohl had stopped by Anthrax’s studio. At one point, Ian texted Grohl and suggested the idea of all of them getting together to record “The Regulator.”

“Charlie and I asked Dave if he’d play drums and sing as well, and he was in. Charlie played bass, and I was on guitar. We ripped the song live in two takes,” Ian shares. “It was so much fun to get to play with Dave on drums and to hear his voice with my guitar. We’re all such huge Bad Brains fans – hope you all get a copy.”

Charlie, who creates the artwork for Anthrax, conceived the idea of having the three musicians pop out of a jack-in-the-box in front of the legendary New York City nightclub, CBGB.

“I had started to think about the old days of CBGB and my love for toy collecting, and everything just fell into place,” Benante shares.

The disc is among the hundreds of limited edition and first pressings offered to independent record stores globally this weekend. The global celebration of the culture of independent record stores is in its 17th year.
