Film drops this fall

The David Bowie biopic, Moonage Daydream, will be released to Blu-ray and DVD on November 15th in the US and December 5th in Europe. An Amazon UK listing shows a region free UHD 4K physical edition is also set for December 5th, although it’s unclear if one is planned for the US at this time.

Considered one of the greatest artists of our time, David Bowie has been moving culture for over 50 years. Moonage Daydream is the first film to be supported by the David Bowie Estate, which granted Morgen unprecedented access to their collection.

In 2017, the estate presented Morgen with over five million assets. Included in the collection were rare and never-before seen drawings, recordings, films, and journals. Morgen spent four years assembling the film and another 18 months designing the soundscape, animations, and color palette.

For the film, the sound team — featuring Bowie’s long-time collaborator, friend and music producer Tony Visconti and Academy Award-winning sound mixer Paul Massey — remixed and translated Bowie’s original stems for a theatrical environment that will be presented in 12.0, 5.0, Atmos, and 7.1/5.1.

Moonage Daydream is a definitive new portrait of Bowie by acclaimed filmmaker Brett Morgen. Morgen synthesized Bowie’s music and art into a sublime kaleidoscopic experiential cinematic odyssey that explores Bowie’s creative, spiritual, and philosophical journey. With never-before-seen footage, performances, and music, the film is guided exclusively by Bowie’s narration with long-time collaborator and friend Tony Visconti serving as the film’s music producer.

The film will be released in cinemas and IMAX on September 16th via Neon in the States and by Universal Entertainment International globally. North American cable and streaming rights have been licensed to HBO and HBO Max. BMG and Live Nation Productions are executive producers and financiers of the film.

The movie, including its title track, draws extensively on Bowie’s 1970 to 1977 song catalogue in which BMG has a 25% stake including “Changes,” “Starman,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “The Jean Genie,” “All The Young Dudes,” and others. BMG’s relationship with the Bowie catalogue is unaffected by Warner Music’s recent acquisition of the Bowie song catalogue.

Moonage Daydream is written, directed, edited, and produced by Brett Morgen. Executive producers are Hartwig Masuch, Kathy Rivkin Daum, and Justus Haerder for BMG; Michael Rapino, Heather Parry, and Ryan Kroft for Live Nation Productions; Bill Zysblat, Tom Cyrana, Aisha Cohen, and Eileen D’Arcy for RZO; Billy Gerber, and Debra Eisenstadt. The feature is a Public Road Productions film.
