Elton John’s ‘Rocketman’ trailer released

Rocketman will be released in May 2019

The first trailer to Rocketman, an epic musical fantasy of Elton John’s life, has been released. The film stars Taron Egerton as John, Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as manager John Reid and Bryce Dallas Howard as John’s mother, Sheila Eileen.

The semi-biopic shows John’s transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into music superstar Elton John in the 60’s and 70’s. It lays out his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.

“I can hear the whole tune in my head. It was all there. I could see all the notes and I just — I have to get it out,” Egerton says in character.

Egerton is singing the songs himself, including “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets” and more John staples.

Rocketman has been in several stages of development since John announced the semi-biopic in 2012. He initially envisioned Justin Timberlake portraying himself, but Tom Hardy was cast early on. Due to the incredible vocal demands of the film, Hardy had to drop out with Egerton signing on in 2017.

Paramount Pictures will release the Dexter Fletcher directed film on May 31st. John serves as a producer on the project.
