Shows in Vienna & Prague have been canceled

Pearl Jam has canceled shows on its European leg of The Gigaton Tour after frontman Eddie Vedder was forced to seek treatment for damage to his vocal cords. The grunge rockers have canceled yesterday’s (Wed, July 20th) show in Vienna and tomorrow’s (Fri, July 22nd) in Prague tomorrow after Vedder suffered throat damage due to the heat, dust and smoke from the wildfires scorching southern Europe.

“We were hopeful that Ed would make a recovery in time to perform tomorrow. He has seen a doctor in Prague and is continuing the treatments for his vocal cords, but unfortunately, there is still no voice available. The effects on his throat from the last outdoor show are still just too brutal,” a the band shares in a statement on social media.

“We again send our sincere apologies to all of those who have worked intensely to put on the show. Even bigger apologies to those that were expecting to attend. We’ve always had memorable shows here and are with you in our extreme disappointment. You can be guaranteed we are doing everything we can to help fix the situation. Again, so sorry.”

The group shared a similar message the day before when it canceled the Vienna show.

“To all those who were anticipating a great Pearl Jam show tonight in Vienna, we were too. However, due to the extreme circumstances at the last outdoor site outside of Paris (heat, dust, and smoke from the fires) our singer Ed Vedder’s throat was left damaged. He has seen doctors and had treatment but as of yet, his vocal cords have not recovered,” the wrote.

“This is brutal news and horrible timing…for everyone involved. Those who work so hard to put on the shows as well as those who give their precious time and energies to attend…. As a band, we are deeply sorry and have tried to find options to still play. And Ed wants to play. There’s just no throat available at this time…”

Tickets to both shows are being refunded at the original point of purchase.

Pearl Jam’s last performance was outdoors on July 17th at Lollapalooza Paris, where much of the wildfires have been raging due to the extreme heat that’s plaguing the area. As of this writing, the group is set to wrap its European run on Sunday and Monday, July 24th and 25th at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.

The North American trek resumes September 1st in Quebec City before wrapping September 22nd in Denver. The fall run includes a stop at New York’s famous Apollo Theatre for a special invitation-only concert as part of SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series on September 10th. Vedder is also headlining two solo sets October 1st and 8th at his own Ohana Festival in Dana Point, CA.

The band is documenting the European run on SiriusXM’s Pearl Jam Radio with “official Bootleg audio.” After airing on the channel, each Bootleg will be available on CD and digital formats in the band’s webstore.

Earlier this month, they released Gigaton (Tour Edition) featuring 11 live songs recorded during the band’s triumphant return to the road in 2021 alongside the group’s critically acclaimed chart-topping eleventh full-length album originally released in 2020. It is available at all DSPs and as in limited edition LP/CD combo only in independent record stores across the country.
