RSD is April 21, 2018
Hip hop duo Run The Jewels has been announced as 2018 Record Store Day (RSD) Ambassadors. This year’s RSD is on Saturday, April 21st and will once again feature a variety of limited and special vinyl releases at independent record stores worldwide.
Previous RSD Ambassadors have included Dave Grohl, Metallica, Jack White, St. Vincent, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop and Chuck D, just to name a few. The full list of special releases is expected to be released in the next few weeks.
This morning (Thurs, Feb 15th), one half of Run The Jewels, rapper/producer EL-P jumped in with Record Store Day’s Michael Kurtz and Rick Johnson to announce the RTJ’s ambassadorship on SiriusXM’s Feedback, which airs on their Volume channel. The Run The Jewels/SiriusXM broadcast is the first time Record Store Day has ever announced its ambassador on-air. SiriusXM’s Volume channel 106 is the first-ever 24/7 talk radio channel dedicated to the discussion of music, and Feedback is the morning live show hosted by Nik Carter and Lori Majewski.
On-air this morning, EL-P joked when contemplating the string of RSD ambassadors, to-date, “I can’t tell you how proud I am to be the least wealthy Record Store Day Ambassador,” but then in a more momentous tone, he added, “This is a community that I’ve always been a part of, so when I was asked to do it, I said ‘of course!’ I’m honored and it means something to me… I’m really grateful to do this.”
Run The Jewels’ Official Ambassador Statement Video hints at a special release for Record Store Day 2018.
EL-P and rapper Killer Mike have a history with Record Store Day, having released a 12″ in 2015 as a Record Store Day First release, and unique offerings for both Record Store Day and Black Friday in 2017.
In its first ten years, Record Store Day (RSD) has grown exponentially and is now celebrated by millions of people, in thousands of independent record stores, worldwide. It has spurred the growth of at least one physical media format, inspired new stores to open their doors, and helped existing stores to grow and expand. Thousands of artists have celebrated with performances, in-store events and limited edition special releases. Unknown numbers of people have had a damn good time at their local record store.
Run The Jewels is also releasing its second craft beer, Panther Like a Panther Stout, a collaboration between craft breweries Interboro, Pipeworks and J. Wakefield. Killer Mike and El-P will also be releasing Legend Has It Pilsner in April and Down Double IPA in October. The beverages follow the last year’s release of Stay Gold IPA.
The pair hit the road with Lorde on her Melodrama World Tour beginning March 1st in Milwaukee. Stops include St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle and more.
