Three more weeks are left of production

The Temptations musical, Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of The Temptationsis ending its Broadway run in January 2022. The musical will wrap with its final performance at the Imperial Theatre on January 16th.

A reason for the permanent closure wasn’t disclosed, but Deadline reports that producers have confirmed the musical has recouped its investment on Broadway alone. The play reopened in October 2021 following a pandemic-related closure in March 2020. The show was sidelined again for Christmas due to an uptick of COVID cases, but resumed on Tuesday night (Dec 28th).

The electrifying Tony-nominated musical that follows The Temptations’ extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame made its Broadway premiere on February 28, 2019 with an official opening on March 21st. The show began with a six week run in Los Angeles in 2018 before it held a month-long residency in Toronto.

In celebration of the Broadway opening, Universal Music released a cast album features some of the band’s greatest hits including “My Girl” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do” to “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” and “Cloud Nine.”

The show is currently on a nationwide tour with performances set for Washington, DC through January 16th.

Otis Williams, the group’s only original member, is an executive producer of the musical. Williams was a recent guest on The Music Podcast in which he spoke about the band’s 60th anniversary and his 80th birthday. The national anniversary campaign launched this summer and will run through 2022, in a celebration befitting one of the most revered and prolific musical institutions of all time. The year-long campaign includes Temptations 60, a national concert tour through fall of next year that includes a trip abroad, remastering of their music videos, a new content series and more.
