Figures are slated to ship later this year

Funko has announced a set of five U2 Pop! figures in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band’s seminal album, Achtung Baby and it’s corresponding Zoo TV Tour. The dolls are set to ship in early December and immortalize the group on their 1992-1993 trek across the globe.

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. are captured in their Zoo TV stage attire. Bono is decked out in his leather outfit and sunglasses with mic and stand, The Edge is holding his maroon guitar with vest and leather pants, Adam is holding his blue and tan bass while donning his blue onesie outfit, and Larry is holding drumsticks in his jeans, short sleeve white shirt and black vest from the era.

The fifth figure is Pop! Bono in the car featured on the Achtung Baby cover and videos. Bono, in his signature shades, spins through the streets in this colorful and iconic car as part of the Funko Ride Deluxe collection. An unconfirmed sixth Pop! figure is also rumored to be released as part of the Pop! Albums lineup with The Edge and the album artwork replicated in a 9×9-inch square presented in a collector’s display case.

It’s unclear as of press time if there will be any rare Chase variants of any or all figures, but Walmart will carry an exclusive four pack.

U2 released its seventh studio album, Achtung Baby, in November 1991. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and became one of the most significant records of the Nineties and of U2’s career. Produced by long-time U2 collaborators Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno with Steve Lillywhite, the album was led by “The Fly,” followed by “Mysterious Ways,” “One,” “Even Better Than The Real Thing,” and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.”

The group launched the Zoo TV Tour in February 1992 which mirrored the band’s new musical direction by attempting to “sensory overload” its audience. The nearly two-year run featured elaborate staging with dozens of video screens flashing visual effects, video clips and text phrases. The production was inspired by the Gulf War, morning radio shows, and the desensitizing of the media. It saw Bono portray several characters on stage, including The Fly, Mirror Ball Man and the devilish MacPhisto, who has appeared in a few later tours as well.

The trek composed of five legs with 157 shows performed in arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Much of the Achtung Baby’s 12 tracks were performed on the tour. The trek spawned the Grammy Award-winning 1994 concert film, Zoo TV: Live From Sydney, and was named the highest-grossing North American tour with $151 million.

Last fall, U2 celebrated the 30th anniversary of Achtung Baby. Special standard and deluxe vinyl editions were released in November followed by a 50-track digital box set that included Uber Remixes, Unter Remixes, B-Sides with 22 tracks never-before available digitally.

Most recently, U2 released “Your Song Saved My Life,” from the Sing 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Last spring, Bono and The Edge joined Dutch DJ Martin Garrix for “We Are The People,” the official UEFA Euro 2020 song.

The group’s last album was 2017’s Songs of Experience that followed with a massive tour. U2 last trekked the world with The Joshua Tree 2019 Tour that wrapped in mid-December 2019.

Star Wars director JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions are currently developing a scripted series about U2 that’s in the early stages of development with Netflix and Warner Bros. Television. The untitled series will be penned by Oscar-nominated Anthony McCarten, who wrote the 2018 Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. The band is expected to be involved and are sanctioning the project, although details are currently under wraps.
