The song earned the biggest reaction of the night

Fans were cheering so loud during Garth Brooks’ performance of “Callin’ Baton Rouge” in Baton Route, LA last night (Sat, Apr 30th), a Louisiana State University (LSU) seismograph recorded a small earthquake. The raucous crowd cheered so loudly that seismic data from LSU’s Nicholson Hall nearby was collected.

“I have to ask you, Baton Rouge? Is it time?” Brooks addressed the 102,000 fans in attendance at Tiger Stadium at around 9:25 pm.

The crowd erupted to near deafening cheers as Jimmy Maddlingly’s opening fiddle strains blared through the speakers.

The song followed with the crowd chanting and stomping “LSU!” before Brooks thanked them for the moment.

“I don’t know how I’m going to explain this, but you know that girl you always wanted to take out and then it’s like over in like 10 seconds, kinda thing? I’m telling you that was better than I could ever dream of being,” he says in a video posted on Twitter. “Thanks for letting us be a small piece of thread in the family and the fabric of LSU Tigers!”

“Okay, this is cool. Was able to guess the time that Garth Brooks played ‘Callin’ Baton Rouge’ at this evening’s concert (confirmed it played at about 9:25) from the seismic data collected at @lsu,” Colin Raby, who was monitoring the nearby seismograph that an LSU professor installed for the night, shared on Twitter.

“It was an amazing show at LSU’s Tiger Stadium last night in Baton Rouge,” guitarist Chris Leuzinger shares on Facebook. “100,000+ fans and they were ready to rock. Loudest crowd ever. And when we played “Callin’ Baton Rouge” an LSU seismograph actually recorded a small earthquake. I am truly grateful to be playing these shows. What a wonderful blessing and opportunity!”

This is only the second time in 33 years that jumping and cheering from Tiger Stadium registered as a small earthquake. The first time was on October 8, 1988 when LSU came from a 6-0 deficit against Auburn and won with two minutes left in the game.

The Baton Rouge show has been the largest single show on The Garth Brooks Stadium Tour thus far, after selling out 102,000 tickets within two hours in December 2021.

With just a handful of dates left on the three year trek, the tour concludes with five sold out shows in Dublin, Ireland this September. Four hundred thousand tickets sold out collectively within four hours, marking a new milestone for the country star who hasn’t performed in the city in 25 years.
