Whoever coined the phrase ‘less is more’ certainly wasn’t a fan of Eurovision. Because we all know that where that famous singing contest is concerned, more is definitely more.

The Eurovision Song Contest returns to our screens later this month, following its cancellation last year, amidst the pandemic. The city of Rotterdam will be hosting, following Duncan Laurence’s 2019 victory in Tel Aviv. So, while you predict the Eurovision 2021 winner, why not grab some decs and make the most of the evening, celebrating Eurovision in style.

Here are our suggestions on how to host a Eurovision party.

1. Host a virtual party

For those who have not yet suffered Zoom fatigue, a virtual Eurovision party is a must – particularly if you haven’t got a garden big enough to host 30 when the restrictions are eased slightly later in the month. Or don’t fancy braving the elements, as May showers look here to stay!

Draw countries out of a hat, and each dress up as someone or something famous from that country to add to the fun. Of course, whoever is hosting will automatically be assigned the Netherlands, and it’s up to them to set an agenda in advance. There are also some great ideas for games further down the list.

2. Host a party in person

If you’re fortunate enough to be hosting an in-person Eurovision party, ensure you pull out all of the stops. The main two areas to focus on are décor and your choice of outfit. Perhaps, you don’t have a hanging disco ball, or party lights lying around. Why not make some DIY bunting, out of the countries’ flags? Balloons, party poppers or confetti cannons are also a must.

In terms of costumes, it depends how adventurous you and your guests are feeling. You could play it safe and recommend best party attire, or throw it back to the ‘80s with a retro theme. Or for those who are more creative, why not suggest dressing up as former contestants? There could even be a prize for the best-dressed.

3. Play party games

It’s not a celebration without games, and as far as Eurovision is involved, games are a must. A good place to start is running a sweepstake. Provided there are enough participants, everyone will see who they will be rooting for at the Grand Finale, and whether or not their nominated country can upset the Eurovision odds.

Bingo is another great idea, and while you can find many printable cards online, you can also easily make your own, based on previous trends. Eurovision Bingo is always guaranteed a laugh and the pressure (and competition) to actually watch the show, will be on amongst your troupe, in order to win.

For those in-between moments, test your Eurovision trivia with a quiz or two. Who can name the most former winners?

4. Food and drink

Another must at any party, food and drink is a host’s priority and can make or break the atmosphere. Whether you’re planning a Eurovision party in your back garden, or virtually, so you can cosy up on the sofa and watch the drama unfold, the show goes on for hours – so snacks and refreshments are needed.

Why not add it to the theme of the party? As Rotterdam are the hosts, you could just focus on the delicacies of the Netherlands – stroopwaffels, a cheeseboard with gouda and edam, and Dutch pancakes, all washed down with a Heineken. Or go around the continent with an epic spread, inspired by the all the countries participating. The choice is yours…
