MTV will exclusively premiere new video

Red Hot Chili Peppers will receive the prestigious Global Icon Award and perform live at the 2022 VMAs, airing Sunday, August 28th at 8 pm ET/PT from Prudential Center. The 8x VMAs winners to make their highly-anticipated return to the iconic MTV stage for the first time in over two decades, last performing in 2000 when they received the coveted Video Vanguard Award.

This year, the band scored its 29th nomination – and first since 2006 – looking to take home a win in “Best Rock” for “Black Summer,” the lead single off their platinum-selling chart-topping twelfth studio album, Unlimited Love.

The alternative rockers will add the title of Global Icon during an already landmark year for the band that includes two new studio albums, including just-announced Return of the Dream Canteen, releasing October 14th on Warner Records, and a critically and commercially-acclaimed global stadium tour.

One of the most successful acts in rock history, singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante, have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, won six Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

MTV and Red Hot Chili Peppers also teamed up for an exclusive global video premiere of “Tippa My Tongue,” the lead single off Return of the Dream Canteen, also released today (Fri, Aug 19th).

Originally hailing from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs), the uber prestigious Global Icon Award celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.

LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow are set to anchor the 2022 VMAs, introducing the night’s biggest moments and star-studded lineup of performers, presenters and winners.

Anitta, Blackpink, J Balvin, Jack Harlow, Kane Brown, Lizzo, Måneskin, Marshmello x Khalid, Nicki Minaj and Panic! At The Disco are among the can’t-miss performers set to take the iconic MTV stage. Additional names to be announced soon.

Global superstar Nicki Minaj will also perform live for the first time since 2018 and receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award.

Harlow, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Nas X lead the nominations with seven each. Doja Cat and Harry Styles follow with six each with Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd closely behind with five apiece. Noms for social categories “Group of the Year” and “Song of Summer” to be announced soon.
