Grammy-nominated and rising global Amapiano pop/R&B sensation Tyla releases her newest music video, “Truth Or Dare.” Tyla stars in the video, which is directed by famed director Nabil, known for his work with Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and Frank Ocean. The standout single from Tyla has already accumulated over 136 million views on TikTok.
Though Tyla proudly infuses a pop ambiance into her music, the aspect of storytelling is prevalent in her visual work. Much like the video for “Water,” Tyla’s 2023 mega-hit, Nabil’s “Truth Or Dare” feature, despite its high-spirited nature, carries a distinct plot to accompany the song’s effervescence. Tyla, clearly perturbed by a romantic prospect’s lackadaisical pursuit, flips the script and decides to put her potential love interest’s will to the test. Seconds later, as Tyla croons effortlessly, she finds herself the subject of a high-speed chase that results in a fateful meeting with her pursuer—only to slickly relieve him of his car keys and speed off with the upper hand. Again.
Following the announcement of her upcoming self-titled Tyla in December, the South African native made history on the Billboard charts, becoming the highest-charting female soloist in African history when “Water” ascended to its No. 7 peak on the Billboard Hot 100. The song would go on to be certified platinum by the RIAA, Tyla’s first plaque and an indication that unequivocal stardom is on her horizon.
This Sunday, Tyla is up for her first Grammy Award thanks to “Water,” in the Best Afrobeat Song category.
This year, Tyla will release her proper debut album, which is set to be one of 2024’s most highly-coveted releases. If “Water” and “Truth Or Dare” are any indication, she’s beyond ready.
Tyla’s music pushes boundaries. Infused with her vibrant personality, her songs offer an innovative take on pop and R&B, shimmering with the euphoria of South African amapiano, and an otherworldly approach to production that makes every track feel like something new. Tyla’s emotionally rich music began when she was just 12, penning songs in her diary, which led to writing and singing more seriously as a high schooler. Ever since, she’s been guided by her intuition, which has her primed to build out her fan base and maximize her reach. She’s focused on the year ahead, performing and crafting her debut studio album, with the same intention from when she began. Signed to Epic Records through a joint venture with Johannesburg/New York-based Fax Records, and co-managed by We Make Music and Africa Creative Agency, Tyla is poised to achieve international dominance with style, soul, and spirit.
