Several new projects are in the works

Cody Johnson is prepping new music to be heard very soon. The country star recently revealed to iHeartRadio’s Spencer Graves that a new single is coming in mid-August followed by part one of a two-part album this fall.

“This is the first interview I’ve said this in,” Johnson starts, “so August 14th, we have a new single going to radio. It’s called ‘The Painter.’ This fall, I’m not sure if it will be November or December, the first part of my deluxe album will come out, and I’ve been secretly behind everybody’s back recording a 24-track deluxe album…The album is called Leather.

Johnson says the album features a mix of classic country and gospel sounds.

“But when I recorded it, that’s a gospel song,” he explains. “Those three songs are recorded just for my live show, whether they ever go anywhere that’s because I wanted to. That’s because it’s so country I wanted to. Nobody else would cut it. These songs right here we’d probably put on the radio, because that’s what we’re here to do is make country music. And I think that’s what’s gonna separate us from a lot of people.”

He confirms multiple projects are on the way, including a concept album called The Cowboy Sessions, featuring covers of cowboy songs.

“It’s nothing but old cowboy songs like Marty Robbins, you know, I mean, Willie Nelson, so the entire record is just covers. I’m covering Chris LeDoux. I’m covering George Strait. I’m covering Tom T. Russell and all this stuff,” he adds.

He also wants to transcend the country genre into bluegrass and gospel.

“I think a bluegrass album, I think a gospel album,” he states. “I think it would be really fun one time to just record a full blown like rock album. Like I would never go tour it. Like if I did, I might play like three shows like you go like New York, LA, Chicago or somewhere crazy like Austin.”

Johnson’s most recent studio album, Human: The Double Album, is an 18 track two-disc set that was released in fall 2021 featuring the multi-week No. 1 hit “’Til You Can’t.” Last year, he released Cody Johnson & The Rockin’ CJB Live, a live album that transports the listener to a virtual concert that was recorded during back-to-back-to-back sold out shows last summer with his longtime live band.

Johnson’s had a massive surge in popularity in recent years. During 2022, the former rodeo star received first-ever honors with two CMT Music Awards, two CMA Music Awards, was named one of CMT Artists of the Year, and was the most nominated country artist at the American Music Awards. He increased his career music streams by one billion for the second consecutive year now boasting more than four billion career streams. Johnson was recently awarded with Pandora’s Billionaire plaque signifying more than one billion streams on the internet radio and streaming service. He’s toured across the US selling out more than 40 concerts in 2022 and received additional RIAA certifications now totaling 14.

Among the certifications is a 2x Platinum honor “‘Til You Can’t,” which was also the most listened to country Song of The Year on iHeartRadio, most played song on Mediabase stations, named MusicRow’s Song of The Year, hit the best-of playlists on Spotify’s Hot Country Presents Best Country Songs of 2022 and Amazon’s Best Country Songs of 2022, and landed on Billboard’s Best Songs of 2022 list. The song also won Best Country Song at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
