Disney+ announces ‘The Beach Boys’ documentary

The film will stream starting this spring

Disney+ will premiere The Beach Boys, an all-new documentary profiling the legendary California band, on May 24th.

The documentary traces the band from humble family beginnings with never-before-seen footage and all-new interviews with The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, plus other luminaries in the music business, including Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Don Was. Viewers will also hear from the group’s Carl and Dennis Wilson in their own words, plus view a new interview with Blondie Chaplin and hear audio from Ricky Fataar.

A Kennedy/Marshall and White Horse Pictures Production, The Beach Boys is directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny and written by Mark Monroe.

The film is produced by Frank Marshall, Irving Azoff, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa, Aly Parker, with Nigel Sinclair, Mark Monroe, Tony Rosenthal, Cassidy Hartmann, Glen Zipper, Thom Zimny, Beth Collins, Jimmy Edwards, Susan Genco, Marc Cimino, Jody Gerson, Bruce Resnikoff, and Ben J. Murphy serving as executive producers.

Capitol/UMe will release the soundtrack for The Beach Boys, featuring songs from the film to digital outlets on May 24th. The Beach Boys’ 1964 album Shut Down Vol. 2 will also be released on limited edition blue and white marble vinyl on March 29th.

On April 2nd, the group will release their only official book, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys, through Genesis Publications. The book is the ultimate chronicle of one of the world’s greatest bands as it documents their unique sound, complex harmonies, sensational live shows, and use of innovative recording techniques.

Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston together provide a combined career narrative, especially for this book, and through meticulous compilation from sources worldwide, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson’s words are equally represented. Documenting how they went from a Hawthorne garage band to a global phenomenon, they tell the astounding story of their ascent: perfecting their harmonies, initial fame as a surf group, and then their ultimate progression as pioneering recording artists to become one of the most musically complex ensembles in history.

The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys offers an intimate insight into the lives of the group through never-before-seen images and unprecedented access to the group’s access.
